Penny's working for The Man

Well, it was the Big Moment in our kitchen tonight. Due to the fact that our technical help - ie the only person who maybe could press the remote on the iPod and hold a camera steady at the same time - would be unavailable for the next week or so, we realised we'd better get our entry in to Honey's dancing competition.

Penny entered into the spirit of things, soldiering on through myriad practices and dress rehearsals - actually, totally chaotic attempts at the routine - until we came up with this final version.

I'd be the last to admit that Penny added in some moves of her own as we went along, but I guess perceptive viewers might work that out, so I'll come clean. And you might also notice her casting longing glances at the BIG BISCUIT on the kitchen bench, the intended reward for her hard work.

And yes, she did get the biscuit.

Maggie and Mitch, what I love is to see Penny's wagging tail!

Oh Penny!! This is fantastic - I just love it! And yes - the best part is your waggy-waggy tail! :-) You look so happy as you're dancing (and you pay such good attention too, compared to me!!)

I'm also very impressed that your human managed to choreograph a routine that would fit in your kitchen - and still managed to put all those moves in! Well done to her!! I love your costumes too, by the way, with the matching bandanas - that colour is great on you! :-)

Oh, it's great that you're submitting early - I've had 2 other early entries too (Mango & Dexter his brother) - it's awesome how organised some doggies are - hee! hee! - although I suspect most will be in a last-minute panic next Wed!! :-)

Thank you SO much again for taking part and supporting my dancing contest so much!

Slobbers,
Honey the Great Dane

Oh! I forgot to add that about having a kitty...well, a lot of people choose to keep them as "inside cats" so you wouldn't have to worry about where they're roaming too - so I guess you always have that option. I know a lot of cat lovers say that cats shouldn't be let out at all since statistic show that outdoor cats DO end up with shorter lives (traffic, accidents, attacks by dogs, fights with other cats, etc) as well as the danger to native wildlife, of course. On the other hand, studies also show that indoor cats have a much higher incidence of stress-related conditions, ranging from diabetes and urine infections to behavioural problems like over-grooming.

I personally just can't bear to keep an animal cooped indoors all its life - it just seems unnatural not to let them explore and experience 'real' vegetation, etc, and enjoy the fresh air & sunshine, etc...plus I don't think they develop & grow naturally without being outdoors and doing "cat" things...I certainly noticed that as Muesli was growing, it was getting harder and harder to "satisfy" her wild energy indoors and she was getting into a lot of trouble (Like chewing cables!) whereas once we started letting her out, she was a lot better behaved when she came indoors.

Anyway, we compromise on the whole issue by only letting out cats out during the day - they are always called in at dusk and stay indoors overnight. PLus I spend a lot of time training a very reliable Recall so that I can always find them and call them back when they're out. So far, we have been lucky in that neither Lemon nor Muesli seem interested in roaming far beyond our garden - they're quite happy pottering around in there! :-)

Hsin-Yi, I agree that it would be a happier cat that was allowed to wander. That's why I would worry, lol. I would decide not to keep the cat in, and then spend all my time worrying about where she was!
However, the idea of training a strong recall is wonderful. That might be the answer for me.

Great job! Its amazing to see how far she has come!!!

About the roomba, I dont think you have to have polished floors - I dont. My wood floors are laminate and I have tile in the kitchen. It goes on the carpet rugs I have down at the house.

Hound Girl, your comment on how far Penny has come reminds me that this time last year she could hardly walk! I am so glad to see her moving well and to see her so happy.

Thanks for the info about the roomba. I was, as you can guess, most interested to see your post about it.

Yay, Penny! That's a clever, well-choreographed routine and you performed it with great style and enthusiasm. Great music choice, though we hope you never really have to work for The Man. Working for your mom is much more fun.

That is just a very lovely routine! I like the side to side movement with weave (I have no idea how it is supposed to be called)! I think we will also try to learn it!

Good luck on the contest! You two sure look very natural dancing and I am sure the judges will agree :) Keep on dancing!

Jaana, thanks for the compliment! Penny is a natural, but I must admit I'm just in it for the fun - and for the mental stimulation for Penny.
